Only one inch thick
The depth of the door
Just six inches deep
The joist of the floor
Yet stretching between
Insurmountable
Those aching inches
Miles uncountable
The space between hearts
A relative thing
Crossed not by yelling
But faint whispering
Pound on the ceiling
Shouting through the door
To the ears now closed
Won't hear anymore
Hearts are like windows
Through which soft breeze flows
Closed are protected
When the tempest blows
In softness and care
Throw open the sash
Harshness embitters
Unkindness so brash
Which hardens the heart
And callousness brews
Inability
And coldness ensues
The wreckage now left
When love is withdrawn
Darkness unbroken
By the hopeful dawn
Now lost is the trust
Given free to you
Against a closed heart
Decision to rue
The adjacent room
Continents away
Distance relative
In every way
